Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: plesio- comb. form, -morphy comb. form.
Etymology: < plesio- comb. form + -morphy comb. form, after plesiomorphic adj. (see sense 2 at that entry), plesiomorphous adj. (see sense 2 at that entry). W. Hennig Grundzüge einer Theorie der phylogenetischen Systematik (1950) does not appear to use a corresponding German noun.
Taxonomy.
The state of being plesiomorphic (plesiomorphic adj. 2); ancestral or primitive condition as compared to a later, derived character state. Also (as a count noun): an ancestral or plesiomorphic feature or trait.
