Etymology: < scientific Latin Plesiadapis, genus name (P. Gervais 1877, in Jrnl. Zool. 6 76; < plesi- plesio- comb. form + Adapis , genus name of another fossil primate named by Cuvier c1822: see adapid n. and adj.) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Plesiadapidae, family name ( E.-L. Trouessart Catalogus mammalium (1899) I. 75).
