Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πλήρης , -eme suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πλήρης full ( < the base of πιμπλάναι to fill: see pleio- comb. form) + -eme suffix. Compare keneme n., and also plerematic adj., plerematics n.
Linguistics.
In glossematics: a minimal unit of meaningful expression; contrasted with keneme n. Also: a word which has full lexical meaning on its own, as a noun, verb, adjective, etc., rather than a preposition, auxiliary, article, etc.; = content word n. at content n.1 Compounds 2.
