Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin plāgōsus.
Etymology: < classical Latin plāgōsus lavish with blows, much beaten < plāga blow, stroke (see plaga n.) + -ōsus -ose suffix1. Compare earlier plagosity n.Compare the following:1611 T. Coryate Crudities sig. M6 If such a custome were vsed with vs [sc. exposure of the buttocks by Venetian debtors],..there..would be more naked buttocks shewed..before the Iudges.., then are of young punies in any Grammar Schoole..to their Plagosi Orbilij, that is, their whipping and seuerely censuring-Schoole-masters. N.E.D.(1907) gives the pronunciation as (plăgōu·s) /pləˈɡəʊs/.
