Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin plagium.
Etymology: < classical Latin plagium kidnapping (2nd cent. a.d.), either < ancient Greek πλάγιος oblique (see plagio- comb. form), or < classical Latin plaga net, snare (see plage n.2) + -ium, neuter of -ius, suffix forming adjectives; compare classical Latin plagium netting of game (1st cent. a.d.).
1. Civil Law. The crime of kidnapping (spec. of kidnapping children); an instance of this.
