Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: plagio- comb. form, -tropic comb. form.
Etymology: < plagio- comb. form + -tropic comb. form, after German plagiotrop (J. von Sachs 1882, in Arbeiten Bot. Inst. Würzburg 1879 2 226). N.E.D.(1907) gives only the pronunciation (plēidʒioˌtrǫ·pik) /pleɪdʒɪəʊˈtrɒpɪk/.
Botany.
Designating or relating to a plant part or organ that tends to take up an oblique or horizontal position with relation to the main axis, usually because its own parts react differently to the influence of external stimuli (such as light, gravity, etc.). Contrasted with orthotropic.

1882 S. H. Vines tr. J. von Sachs Text-bk. Bot. (ed. 2) App. 954 Sachs points out..that most monosymmetrical or bilaterally symmetrical organs present..dorsal and ventral halves..of different internal structure... When this is the case the two halves react differently to external forces (light, gravity, etc.) and the organ is, according to his terminology, plagiotropic,..some polysymmetrical organs are plagiotropic also.
