Etymology: Ultimately < Hellenistic Greek γονεύειν to beget < ancient Greek γονεύς father, ancestor ( < γόνος begetting, offspring, race (see gono- comb. form) + -εύς , suffix forming masculine nouns) + -τικός, suffix forming adjectives from verbs (compare -ic suffix); earliest in polygoneutic adj., after German Polygoneuont (H. Weismann 1875, as also are Digoneuont, Monogoneuont).
