Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: plagio- comb. form, -cephalic comb. form.
Etymology: < plagio- comb. form + -cephalic comb. form, after plagiocephaly n. In sense 2 after post-classical Latin Plagiocephali ( Linnaeus Systema Naturæ(1758) I. 22). Compare French plagiocéphale (1876 or earlier). N.E.D.(1907) gives only the pronunciation (plēi:dʒioˌsĭfæ·lik) /ˌpleɪdʒɪəʊsɪˈfælɪk/.
1. Medicine and Physical Anthropology. Designating or characterized by an oblique deformity of the skull (plagiocephaly).

1874 G. Busk in Jrnl. Anthropol. Inst. 3 90 (note) Linnæus's term plagiocephalic is emphatically descriptive of the more common form of American skull, and may be conveniently used to distinguish the broad head, with flattened forehead, so characteristic of the greater part of the American races.
