Etymology: Probably < French plagiat kidnapping (1752; now obsolete in this sense; 1697 in sense ‘plagiarism’) < plagi- (in plagiaire plagiarist, kidnapper: see plagiary adj. and n.) + -at -ate suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin plagiare to kidnap (see plagiator n.).
