Etymology: < placo- comb. form + -odont comb. form, after scientific Latin Placodus, genus name ( L. Agassiz Recherches sur les poissons fossiles (1833) II. i. 15). Compare scientific Latin Placodontia, order or suborder name (H. G. Seeley 1888, in Proc. Royal Soc. 44 283).
