Etymology: < classical Latin placidus pleasing, favourable, gentle, mild, calm < placēre to please (see placet int. and n.) + -idus -id suffix1. Compare French placide (1495 in Middle French; rare before 19th cent.), Spanish plácido (1526 or earlier), Portuguese plácido (1567), Italian placido (a1364).
