Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: placenta n., -ule suffix.
Etymology: < placenta n. (see sense 2 at that entry) + -ule suffix. With the form placentula compare -ula suffix. Compare also post-classical Latin placentula small flat bread or cake (from 1287 in British sources), tablet (1653 or earlier; apparently not found in botanical sense ‘cotyledon’ until later). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (plăse·ntiul) /pləˈsentjuːl/.
Botany and Zoology. Obsolete.
A small placenta; a small structure with the function of a placenta; (Botany) = cotyledon n. 3.
