Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin platanus.
Etymology: < classical Latin platanus plane tree < ancient Greek πλάτανος , alteration of an earlier form πλατάνιστος , perhaps < πλατύς broad (see plat adv.), either because of its broad foliage or because of its flat bark. Compare later plane n.1, plantain n.2, platan n.In Old English only in one isolated attestation in the abbreviated form platan' , which has been expanded to platanus (see quot. OE at main sense). In β. forms apparently after post-classical Latin plantanus (see plantain n.2), perhaps reinforced by the Romance forms cited at plantain n.2
