Etymology: Apparently < South African Dutch platanna (Afrikaans platanna ), of uncertain origin, probably < plat flat (see plat adj.) + a second element of uncertain origin (perhaps the female forename Anna). See further S. P. E. Boshoff& G. S. Nienaber Afrikaanse etimologieë (1967) at that entry.The word was formerly frequently etymologized from South African Dutch *plathander (ostensibly < plat flat (see plat adj.) + -hander hander n.²; compare sense main sense at that entry), but this word has not been traced, and the apparently relatively late attestation and rarity of the English variant plathander (compare quot. 1911) are not in favour of the alternative etymology.
