Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin platanus; French platane.
Etymology: In early use < classical Latin platanus plane tree (see platanus n.). In later use largely reborrowed < Middle French, French platane (1548; < classical Latin platanus : see above). Compare Old French, Middle French, French †platan (end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th cent. in Old French, subsequently from 1530; earlier as plaitoine (c1150)), Spanish plátano (late 14th cent. or earlier), Portuguese plátano (14th cent.), Italian platano (a1320). Compare earlier platanus n. Compare also plane n.1 and later plantain n.2
Now rare (chiefly archaic and literary).
A plane tree, esp. Platanus orientalis.
