Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch ploten.
Etymology: < Dutch ploten (also Dutch regional (West Flanders) plotten ) to pluck, to strip the wool from a fleece (late 13th cent. in Middle Dutch as plōten ; also in Middle Dutch in senses ‘to pick fruit, harvest’ and ‘to reap the benefits of’); further etymology uncertain and disputed. Compare earlier ploater n., and perhaps also plot v.2
Scottish and English regional (northern) in later use.
