释义

Pliniann.1adj.

Brit. /ˈplɪnɪən/, U.S. /ˈplɪniən/, /ˈplaɪniən/
Forms: also (in sense B. 2) with lower-case initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Plīniānus.
Etymology: < classical Latin Plīniānus < Plīnius , the name of a Roman family, especially the name of Pliny the Elder (Gaius Plinius Secundus, a.d. 23–79), and of his nephew Pliny the Younger (Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus, c a.d. 61–114) + -ānus -an suffix. In sense A. 1 with reference to Pliny the Elder's stated preference for this variety of cherry: see Pliny Nat. Hist. 15. 103. In sense B. 2 after Italian pliniano (A. Stoppani Corso di Geologia (1871) I. ii. v. 310), so called because the eruption of Vesuvius in a.d. 79, which killed Pliny the Elder and was described by his nephew Pliny the Younger, was of this kind; compare French plinien (1889 in éruption plinienne ), German plinianisch (1895 in the passage referred to in quot. 1903 at sense B. 2).
