Etymology: < Pliensbach, the name of a locality near Boll, a village near Göppingen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany + -ian suffix, after German Pliensbachien (A. Oppel 1858, in Jahresheft des Vereins f. vaterlandische Naturkunde in Württemberg 14 249).
