Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin plica , -iferous comb. form.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin plica (see plica n.) + -iferous comb. form, after scientific Latin plicifera, specific name ( Lamarck Hist. nat. des animaux sans vertèbres (1818) V. 370), pliciferus, specific name (A. Bivona Bernadini 1832, in Effemeridi scientifiche e letterarie per la Sicilia 2 22; I. Lea Synopsis Family Naïades (1836) 13). Compare pliciform adj. and earlier plicate adj. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pli-, pləisi·fĕrəs) /plɪ-/ /plaɪˈsɪfərəs/.
Biology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Having folds or ridges.

1858 R. G. Mayne Expos. Lexicon Med. Sci. (1860) 981/2 Pliciferus, bearing or having folds, as the fibrous skeleton of the Spongia plicifera, the tubes of the Vermes plicifera: pliciferous.
1890 Cent. Dict. Pliciferous, provided with folds or plicæ; specifically, in entomology, said of those elytra which have an internal plica or ridge.
