Etymology: < classical Latin plicāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of plicāre to fold, in post-classical Latin also to add a musical ornament (13th cent.; from c1320 in British sources), alteration (after -plicāre in e.g. complicāre complicate v., implicāre implicate v.) of an unattested *plecāre , intensive formation < an unsuffixed form of the base of plectere to fold (see plexus n.).Compare Middle English plyke to fold (one isolated attestation; < classical Latin plicāre):1467 T. Howes in Paston Lett. & Papers (2004) II. 565 He, havyng a scedule yn hys honde and rad yt naught, dyd plyke yt and sett wex to hyt.
