Origin: A borrowing from Akawaio. Etymon: Akawaio pawaruu.
Etymology: < Akawaio pawaruu. Compare Macusi paiwa. Perhaps compare Portuguese paiauaru (1833), dubiously conjectured to be of Tupi origin. N.E.D. (1907) enters this under piwarrie and gives the pronunciation as (piwǫ·ri) /pɪˈwɒrɪ/.
A mildly alcoholic drink of Guyana made by fermenting burnt cassava with grated sweet potatoes. Cf. casiri n.
