Etymology: < scientific Latin Pitohui, genus name ( R.-P. Lesson Traité d'ornithologie (1830) V. 375) < French Pitohoui ( R.-P. Lesson & P. Garnot Voy. Coquille: Zool. (1826) I. viii. 633) < Papuan pitohui.

Any of several New Guinea songbirds constituting the genus Pitohui, which are large flycatchers resembling shrikes, some of them containing a powerful neurotoxin in the skin and feathers (frequently with distinguishing word); (in form Pitohui) the genus itself.The pitohuis have, in recent years, been variously placed in the families Colluricinclidae, Pachycephalidae, Muscicapidae, and Corvidae.
