Etymology: Origin uncertain; apparently < an unattested Middle French *pique devant or *piqué devant , respectively < pique pike n.⁴ (or perhaps ‘spade at cards’: see pick n.⁶) or *piqué provided with a pike or spade ( < pique , in either of the above senses + -é -y suffix⁵) + devant in front (see devant adv.).Forms in pickede , picka- , picker- , picket- , picki- , picky , pick-a- , pica- appear to reflect a French form piqué , whereas forms in pick- , pike , peake appear to reflect a French form pique . Compare also pickenovant , in the same sense (one isolated attestation; apparently < an unattested Middle French *pique en avant or *piqué en avant , respectively < pique or *piqué (see above) + en avant in front (11th cent. in Old French; < en in + avant (see avant- comb. form)):1594 2nd Rep. Dr. Faustus xvii. sig. G4 He takes the greate slaue by the tip of his pickenouant. It is remarkable that not only is none of the above phrases known in French, but neither is piqué ever attested in this sense.
