Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French piperounge.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Probably a transferred use of Anglo-Norman piperounge, piperonge, peperonge, poperouge rose hip (c1250; compare French regional (Normandy) pupinrouoge haw), of uncertain origin: perhaps < either Old French pepin seed of fleshy fruit (see pippin n.) or Anglo-Norman peple , pople , pueple wild plum, bullace (a1300; perhaps a diminutive < the same Romance base as Old French pepin : see pippin n.; compare post-classical Latin pepula (c1220 in a northern French source)) + rouge red (see rouge adj.), or perhaps < post-classical Latin berberis barberry n. + a suffix of uncertain origin. Compare pepperidge n.
