Adopted as a scientific Latin specific epithet by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum (1753) I. 285.

Any of several tall, spiny-leaved, tropical American bromeliads of the genus Bromelia; esp. B. pinguin, used for hedging in the Caribbean; (also) the edible fruit of this plant. Also called pingwing, wild pine.It is not clear that Dampier's penguin (quot. 1697) was a bromeliad.
