Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek βελόνη , -ite suffix¹.

Etymology: < ancient Greek βελόνη needle (see Belone n.) + -ite suffix¹. In sense 1 after scientific Latin Belonites ( E. F. Glocker Generum et Specierum Mineralium Synopsis (1847) 27), in turn after German Nadelerz (see needle ore n. at needle n. Compounds 2). In sense 2 after German Belonit (F. Zirkel 1867, in Zeitschrift der Deutschen geologischen Gesellschaft 19 739).
