Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pineau.
Etymology: < French pineau (1406 in Middle French denoting the grapes, early 15th cent. denoting the wine) < pin pine (tree) + -eau -el suffix2, after the form of the grape cluster resembling a pine cone.French pineau is apparently a western regional equivalent to pinot Pinot n. (which is mainly used in the east, especially Burgundy), although the two words only became homophones in or after the 17th cent.
