Etymology: < post-classical Latin pityriasis (15th cent. in a British source) < Hellenistic Greek πιτυρίασις scurf < ancient Greek πίτυρον bran, in Hellenistic Greek also scurf (of uncertain origin) + -ιασις -iasis suffix. In sense 2 after scientific Latin Pityriasis, genus name (P. Lesson 1839, in Revue zool. 2 136), alluding to the straw-coloured bristles on the head.

1. Medicine. Originally: dandruff or scurf. In later use: any of several skin diseases characterized by the presence of lesions with bran-like scales. Frequently with distinguishing post-classical Latin word or words.
