Forms: 1800s pittacall, 1800s– pittacal.
Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Pittakall.
Etymology: < German Pittakall (K. von Reichenbach 1833, in Neues Jahrb. der Chem. u. Physik 8 3) < ancient Greek πίττα pitch (see pissasphalt n.) + κάλλος beauty (see callisthenic adj. and n.). Compare French pittacale (1836 or earlier as †pittacalle; now rare).
Chemistry (now chiefly historical).
A dark blue colouring matter obtained by Reichenbach as a high-boiling fraction in the fractional distillation of wood-tar.

2000 S. Garfield Mauve 44 In 1834 Runge had used carbolic acid to make aurin (a red colour), and pittacal (a deep blue) was obtained from beechwood tar.
