Etymology: < pipe n.1 + weed n.1With sense 3 compare earlier use of Walter Pipeweed in J. Belknap's Foresters (1792) as a personification of the state of Virginia (later assumed to be a nickname for Sir Walter Raleigh (1554–1618), in allusion to his association with the introduction of tobacco-smoking in England).
