Etymology: < German Piperazin (A. T. Mason 1887, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 20 267) < Piper- (in Piperidin piperidine n.) + Azin azine n. Compare French pipérazine (1903). N.E.D.(1907) gives the pronunciation as (pi·pĕrăzəin) /ˈpɪpərəzaɪn/.

A strongly basic crystalline compound, C₄H₁₀N₂, whose molecule is an unsaturated six-membered ring with nitrogen atoms at opposite carbon atoms, and which is used in the form of a salt or hydrate as an anthelmintic. Also: a derivative of this compound.
