Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin accidentia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin accidentia unforeseen event (see accidence n.1): see -ency suffix. Compare earlier accidence n.1 In sense 2 punningly after excellency n.
1. A chance occurrence or circumstance; (contextually) a fortuitous event, a mishap. In non-count use: fortuitous disposition, chance. Cf. accident n. 5a. rare.
