Etymology: Apparently < pitch kettle n. + -ed suffix2. The underlying metaphor is unclear; perhaps the implication is of being stuck in pitch (compare quot. 1788), or perhaps it refers to the darkness of the contents of a pitch kettle.Perhaps compare the following (and for a different explanation of the origin of the expression based on this see Notes & Queries (1859) 7 365/2):1785 F.
