Origin: An imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Imitative. Compare whist int.1, pish int., hist int., and later psst int. N.E.D.(1907) gives the pronunciation as (pist, p'st) /pɪst/ /pst/.
Obsolete.
Used to attract attention, or to convey important or secret information. Cf. psst int.
