Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pipe n.1, tree n.
Etymology: < pipe n.1 + tree n. First used in the 17th cent. to translate post-classical Latin Syringa in its then wide sense (see syringa n.).
1. Any of several shrubs called syringa by 16th- and 17th-cent. herbalists. Cf. pipe n.1 14b.
a. The common lilac, Syringa vulgaris. Also blue pipe-tree. Now chiefly historical.
