Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish pimentón.
Etymology: < Spanish pimentón paprika, red pepper from which this is made (c1802 or earlier) < pimiento pimento n. + -ón -oon suffix.
Paprika that has been smoked in the course of its production, as used in Spanish cooking. Also: the red pepper from which this is made, or the plant producing this fruit (= pimiento n. 3) (rare).
