Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French piment.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Old French piment, piement (Middle French piment , piement ) spice, spiced wine (12th cent.), sweet pepper (1664; after Spanish pimiento pimento n.) < classical Latin pigmentum (see pigment n.). Compare Old Occitan piment (11th cent.), Catalan piment (14th cent.), Spanish vino piment (13th cent.). Compare earlier pigment n.It is possible that some forms show a long vowel in the first syllable, and hence could alternatively be explained as being developed from α. forms at pigment n.
Now rare.
1. A type of wine flavoured with honey and spices, taken for refreshment or used as an ingredient in medicinal recipes. Now archaic and historical.
