Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pimelea.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Pimelea (J. Banks and D. Solander in J. Gaertner De Fructibus et Seminibus Plantarum (1788) I. 186) < ancient Greek πιμελή fat ( < the same Indo-European base as πῖαρ fat (see piarhaemia n.) + -μέλη , suffix forming nouns, also seen in θυμέλη thymele n.) + scientific Latin -a -a suffix¹ 1, so called on account of its oily seeds.

A genus of the family Thymelaeaceae, comprising evergreen shrubs native to Australasia and bearing white, pink, or yellow flowers in terminal heads, often surrounded by coloured bracts; (also pimelea) a shrub of this genus.

1942 C. Barrett Austral. Wild Flower Bk. 178 The Pimeleas or rice-flowers belong to the same family as sweet-scented Daphne.
