Origin: A borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymon: Scottish Gaelic pìob mhór.
Etymology: < Scottish Gaelic pìob mhór < pìob pipe n.1 + mhór , feminine of mór large (see mere adj.1).In Scottish Gaelic the name of the instrument is contrasted with pìob bheag , literally ‘small pipe’, the Scottish equivalent of the uillean pipes (compare small-pipes n. at small adj. and n.2 Compounds 4, uillean pipes n.). N.E.D.(1906) gives the pronunciations (pīp vōə·r, pī:əb vōə·ɹ) /piːp ˈvɔər/, /ˌpiːəb voːr/.
