Etymology: < scientific Latin pisolithus (see pisolite n.); compare -lith comb. form. Compare French pisolithe (see pisolite n.). Compare earlier pisolite n.The scientific Latin word is attested earlier in an English context:1758 Philos. Trans. 1757 (Royal Soc.) 50 28 They discovered in the cavities large masses of a stony concretion, which were a sort of pisolithi. With pisolithic adj. at Derivatives compare French pisolithique (see pisolitic adj.). Compare earlier pisolitic adj.
Geology.
Each of the small rounded accretions resembling peas which are cemented together to make up a pisolitic rock, similar to but larger than ooliths.
