Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < classical Latin pinna pinnacle (see pinna n.2) + -et suffix1), or perhaps a misunderstanding of pinnet n.1 by Scott (see quot. 1805), perhaps influenced by the classical Latin word. N.E.D.(1906) gives the pronunciation as (pi·nėt) /ˈpɪnɪt/.
