Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin pinnātus , -ped comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin pinnātus winged, in post-classical Latin also finned (see pinnate adj.) + -ped comb. form. In specific sense after scientific Latin Pinnatipedes, former order name ( J. Latham Index Ornithologicus(1790) II. 775), after earlier Pinnipedes (see pinniped n. and adj.); compare French pinnatipèdes, plural (1831 or earlier). N.E.D.(1906) gives the pronunciation as (pinæ·tiped) /pɪˈnætɪpɛd/.
Ornithology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.

Of a bird: having lobate toes; fin-footed; spec. belonging to the former order Pinnatipedes, which included phalaropes, coots, and grebes.
