Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Plenargyrit.

Etymology: < German Plenargyrit ( F. Sandberger Untersuchungen über Erzgänge (1882) I. 96), apparently < classical Latin plēnus full (see pleni- comb. form) + ancient Greek ἄργυρος silver (see argyro- comb. form) + German -it -ite suffix¹, after Miargyrit miargyrite n.Sandberger's reasoning behind his choice of the first element (assuming that it is indeed Latin plēn-) is unclear. Although the name seems to imply that the mineral has a higher silver content than miargyrite, AgSbS₂, the proportion by weight of silver in plenargyrite is actually lower and Sandberger explicitly notes this as the motivation for his name.

A mineral consisting of a sulphide of silver and bismuth, AgBiS₂, that is a paramorph of matildite.

1890 Cent. Dict. 4552/1 Plenargyrite, a sulphid of bismuth and silver found near Schapbach in Baden: it is supposed to be similar in form to miargyrite.

1944 C. Palache et al. Dana's Syst. Mineral. (ed. 7) I. 430 The name matildite is established through usage and is here retained for the species, although schapbachite and plenargyrite have priority.

1951 Amer. Mineralogist 36 437 Matildite AgBiS₂ is commonly more or less intergrown with galena (‘schapbachite’, ‘plenargyrite’).
