单词 pilferer
释义

pilferern.

Brit. /ˈpɪlf(ə)rə/, U.S. /ˈpɪlf(ə)rər/
Forms: Middle English pulfrour, 1500s pylferer, 1500s– pilferer.
Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Perhaps also partly either (i) a borrowing from French. Or partly (ii) a borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Etymons: pilfer v., -er suffix1; pilfer n., -er suffix1; French pelfre , -er suffix1.
Etymology: In quot. 1350 apparently < either pilfer n. or pilfer v. + -er suffix1 (although attested earlier than either the noun or the verb), unless either independently < Anglo-Norman pelfre (see pelf n.) + -er suffix1 or < an unattested Anglo-Norman agent noun < pelfre (compare Middle French peufrier (1388), and also Old French, Middle French (Normandy) pelfrier second-hand clothes dealer (14th to 16th centuries)). In later use < pilfer v. + -er suffix1.
A thief, esp. a petty thief.
