Psychology. Now chiefly historical.
A form of group analysis developed by American psychoanalyst Trigant Burrow (1875–1950), intended to discover and resolve neurosis arising from the posited tension between the responses of the human species conceived as an organismic whole and the behaviour arising from the use of language and symbol by the self-aware individual in the context of human society. Cf. phylum n. 1b.

1940 L. E. Hinsie & J. Shatzky Psychiatric Dict. 418/2 Phyloanalysis regards the symptoms of the individual and of society as but outer aspects of impaired tensional processes which affect the balance of the organism's internal reaction as a whole.

Burrow Neurosis of Man vii. 168 Phyloanalysis set out with the attempt to analyse the affecto-symbolic ‘I’-persona and its special prerogative as commonly assumed by social man; and it undertook to differentiate this pseudo-entity from the organism's biological basis of integration and behaviour.
1961 Philos. Sci. 28 94 Phyloanalysis and phylopathology are cognate disciplines applicable to the investigation and control of human conflict or disturbances on a broad organismic basis.
1992 M. F. Ettin Found. & Applic. Group Psychotherapy (1999) iii. 68 Burrow eventually abandoned the rudiments of psychoanalysis to emphasize a ‘phyloanalysis’, aimed at discovering the universal principles and societal influences behind both pathological and normal behaviors.
