Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: bear n.1, claw n.
Etymology: In α. forms < the genitive of bear n.1 + claw n. In β. forms < bear n.1 + claw n. Originally after post-classical Latin branca ursina brank-ursine n. (so called on account of the supposed resemblance of the leaves to the paw of a bear). With sense 1 compare earlier bear's foot n.Compare also Dutch berenklauw (1554 in Dodoens), Middle Low German bērenklāwe , bārenklāwe , German Bärenklaue (15th cent.), Swedish björnklo (1538), Old Danish bjorneklo (15th cent.; Danish bjørneklo ), all denoting acanthus and also cow parsnip (compare brank-ursine n.). In sense 2 probably after German Bärentatze, literally ‘bear paw’, in the same sense (1920 or earlier).
