Etymology: < phyllo- comb. form + -rhine comb. form, after scientific Latin†Phyllorrhina, former genus name (C. L. Bonaparte Iconografia della fauna italica (1837)). Compare Phyllorhininae, former subfamily name (G. E. Dobson 1875, in Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist. 16 347).The name Phyllorhina was first used by W. E. Leach (1816) for a different genus, and then by Bonaparte (1831), but neither of these uses constituted valid publication of the genus name. Leach's Phyllorhina is now placed in the genus Rhinolophus, and Bonaparte's Phyllorrhina in Hipposideros. Phyllorrhina (plural) was applied by C. Koch (1860) as a group name within the family Rhinolophidae. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fi·lŏrəin) /ˈfɪləraɪn/.
