Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Greek ϕύλλον , -oid suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕύλλον leaf (see phyllo- comb. form) + -oid suffix, after post-classical Latin phylloideus ( C. F. Brisseau de Mirbel Élémens de physiologie végétale (1815) II. 624). Compare French phylloïde , adjective (1815 in the same source), post-classical Latin phyllodes (1813 or earlier), German Phylloid , noun (1873 in the passage translated in quot. 1875 at sense B.).In quot. 18581 at sense A., Mayne perhaps misinterpreted de Mirbel's French form as Latin.
