Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French phyllode.
Etymology: < French phyllode ( A. P. de Candolle Introd. à l'étude de la bot. (1835) II. 437/2) < post-classical Latin phyllodium phyllodium n.; compare -ode comb. form1. Compare slightly earlier phyllodium n.Sense 2 is apparently not paralleled in French.
1. Botany. An expanded, usually flattened petiole resembling and functioning as a leaf-blade, the true leaf-blade being absent or much reduced in size, as in many acacias and in pitcher plants of the genus Sarracenia.
