Etymology: < phylo- comb. form + embryo n., after earlier terms coined by A. Hyatt (phylogerontic adj., phylonepionic adj. at phylo- comb. form , etc., and metembryo n., neoembryo n., protembryo n., typembryo n., etc.). With phylembryonic adj. at Derivatives compare metembryonic adj., neoembryonic adj. at neoembryo n. Derivatives, protembryonic adj. at protembryo n. Derivatives.
Zoology. Now disused.
In the evolutionary theory of A. Hyatt and others: the final stage in development of an animal embryo, in which the characteristics specific to the major group to which it belongs are fully established, regarded as representing an ancestral form; (also) the ancestral form itself, whether theoretical or identified with an extant or fossil species. Cf. neoembryo n., typembryo n.
